A surprising pick from Holliman: fading specialist Thomas, one of the clear favorites behind Rahm. The two-time PGA Championship winner has two wins since the summer of 2020 and has finished T-40 and T-25 in his two full-field events this season. His last top-10 finish in such an event was at the RBC Canadian Open last June. The 29-year-old has shot 70 or worse in eight of his last 12 competitive tours. Thomas is 127th in strokes gained so far and 180th in scoring average. It looks like he’s shaking off some rust, so Holliman will walk away.
The Expert, on the other hand, is firmly behind Schoeffel, who is coming off a T-3 finish at American Express. Schaffel is a California native and has found tremendous success in Torrey Pines in recent years. In fact, Schaeffel had a runner-up finish at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open and a T-7 finish at the 2021 US Open, also played at Torrey Pines. He will enter this week’s event ranked first in strokes gained: almost-the-greens (1.227), third in scoring average (69.268) and 13th in greens in regulation percentage (75.31%), all of which are important for farmers.
