New signing for FDJ-Suez and e-Sports world champion Loes Adegeest got the better of home favorite Amanda Spratt (Trek-Segafredo). Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race to take her first Women’s WorldTour victory.
“It was definitely a tough final with a steep climb and it was a long sprint. I am still holding my breath,” Edgest said on Saturday.
“We went for grace [Brown] But on the first climb I felt really strong and came on top first and then we switched to plan B and it worked,” continued the Dutch star.
“I still can’t really believe it, so it has to sink in first. But of course to start the season like that, it’s only January and I’ve already won a WorldTour race, it’s unbelievable.
Spratt, who finished second in a two-up sprint, said she was disappointed with how she ran in the final.
“To be honest I’m a little disappointed. The team rode so well to set Brody up [Chapman] And me for that final. We had a really good run in the last few laps and then I couldn’t shake the lows adjust in the last lap,” she said.
“She told me she wasn’t allowed to work so I figured what I should do because it’s still a good position to try and make it to the finish line.
I’m a little disappointed. I think I messed up my sprint a bit. I mean second place, I’ve had a really nice summer so I’m happy.
The race had some early breakaways and lots of attacks, but the race stayed mostly together until Trek Segafredo and FDJ-Suez carried the pace before the Chalambara climb.
A move by EF Education-TIBCO’s Christa-Dobell Hickock on the lower slopes attracted the likes of Amanda Spratt, Nikola Noskova (Zaf Cycling), and eventual winner Edegest, but they were brought back by the remnants of the peloton.
Predictably, the group split again on the climb for the second time with Trek–Segafredo leading the charge for Spratt. A single trio of Adygest, Spratt and Noskova forced the gap.
Noskova was dropped as he made the climb and Adigeest and Spratt held off the chasing peloton for the line.
The two played cat and mouse in the run-in after Spratt did most of the work and closed on the back of the peloton. Adgest opened her sprint from behind and held off Spratt to take her first Women’s WorldTour victory.
