A massive super middleweight bout is now officially set for early 2023 as Caleb Plante and David Benavidez are set to clash. In November, the plant was confirmed the report on his twitter that he had signed the contract to carry out the fight. The fight was officially announced by Premier Boxing Champions on Wednesday.
The fight will take place on March 25 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will air on Showtime pay-per-view. It’s a clash of former world champions, both looking to make a move that could potentially lead them to another shot at world championship gold, along with Benavidez’s interim WBC title.
Plante (22-1, 13 KOs) is coming off his October fight with Anthony Dirrell as the most potent knockout contender of the year. That win helped Plant overcome his first career loss, a November 2021 TKO loss to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a loss that also ended Plant’s nearly three-year run as IBF super middleweight champion.
Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) is a former two-time WBC super middleweight champion. The only setbacks in his career have come from his own mistakes. He lost his WBC title for the first time after failing a cocaine drug test. After winning the title back, he lost the belt before his next fight, after Romer failed to make weight ahead of his fight with Alexis Angulo.
Without a title, the division’s top warriors have been left out of stepping into the ring with Benavidez. The fight with Plant gives Benavidez a big-name opponent and an opportunity to all but force his way into a fight with the likes of undisputed super middleweight champion Alvarez or other top names and make his way back to the world title.
