Brisbane Heat 188/4 (Hane 73*, Peirson 57*) beat Melbourne Stars 184/3 (Rogers 41, Stoinis 36*) by four runs

Brisbane Heat’s late push towards the BBL final continued with a thrilling four-run win over the Melbourne Stars at the Gabba.

Left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson bowled the last over of the match for the second time in as many matches. The Stars needed 14 but Johnson with nerves of steel included Marcus Stoinis and Hilton Cartwright.

The Heat’s victory was set up by an unbroken 133-run partnership by wicket-keeper Jimmy Pearson and English import Sam Hahn, who, batting first, bundled out the home team for 188 for 4.

Last-placed Stars needed 44 from 14 deliveries to go before Cartwright and Stoinis were both caught on full tosses that were ruled right at waist.

The pair hit sixes and fours to end the last ball showdown. Johnson bowled a fine yorker and kept Stoinis calm.

The Heat, with 13 points, can seal a top-five finals spot with a win over the Hobart Hurricanes in Launceston on Wednesday. The table is that depending on the results the Heat may finish in third place or still miss the finals.

Stars opener Tom Rogers smashed a 20-ball 41 to help the visitors make rapid progress in chasing down the total in an innings that included three big sixes down the leg side.

Mitchell Swepson (2-23) was crucial with the ball for the Heat, with his accurate legspinners returning the early momentum.

Earlier, Hahn and Pierson put on 55 for 4 in the seventh over and took 30 runs in two power surge overs to complete their partnership.

Peirson, playing his 101st BBL game for the Heat, was square to the wicket, while Hahn hit several shots, including a reverse ramp for a six. It was a rescue mission that could yet prove decisive in ensuring the heats play final.

England international Luke Wood breathed fire and brimstone in a dreadful opening spell for the Stars.

He dismissed Josh Brown and Marnus Labuschagne in his first two overs and dismissed Matt Renshaw on his first ball. Renshaw got himself out for 7 when he took Adam Zampa at mid-off and was lost.
