Michigan has fired co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss amid an investigation by university police following “reports of computer access crimes.” The incident reportedly occurred during December 21–23 at Schembechler Hall, the team’s football facility, although no additional details have been released by the UMPD.
“I am proud of the success we have had over the past two seasons and am grateful to all Michigan players, coaches and staff. There is no limit to the potential of Team 144.” Weiss said in a statement, “I have nothing but respect for the University of Michigan and the people who make it such a great place. I look forward to putting this matter behind me and turning my attention to the sport I love.”
A January 5 report in the university’s Daily Crime and Fire Log referred to “fraudulent activity involving someone who accessed university email accounts without authorization”, but did not mention Weiss specifically. .
Weis was initially suspended while the investigation was ongoing and was not involved in team or recruiting activities, nor was he allowed into team facilities. According to a police spokesperson, the investigation is ongoing. Weis coached Michigan in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl on December 31, 2022, against TCU.
Following the departure of Josh Gatiss after spending the 2021 season as quarterbacks coach under coach Jim Harbaugh, Weis was promoted to co-offensive coordinator alongside offensive line coach Sharon Moore in 2022. Despite the coordinator change, the Wolverines earned their second consecutive Big Ten championship and made a trip to the College Football Playoff.
Prior to Michigan, Weis spent over a decade in various roles on the Baltimore Ravens staff under Jim Harbaugh’s brother, John. Weis played punter at Vanderbilt from 2001 to 2003, but never appeared in a game.
