The Indian cricket team has ushered in a new era in T20 cricket, with youngsters under Hardik Pandya getting more and more opportunities in the team while veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are sitting out. Although neither of them has expressed any desire to quit the shortest format, there is no clarity about their future. Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif feels at least one of the two experienced batsmen – Kohli and Rohit – needs to make a comeback in the shortest format for India.
“You can find replacement for KL Rahul but it will not be so easy to find replacement for experienced players (like Kohli and Rohit). Yes, Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw, Ishan Kishan can replace him in future. But these same experiences Same players, playing at the same time. Can these players take you to the final of the T20 World Cup?” Youtube channel,
Latif still believes that players like Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw, Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda and Ishan Kishan are amazing players but still lack the experience that is required to perform at an event of the World Cup’s stature.
“Gill, Shaw, Tripathi, Hooda, Ishan… Can these players take you to the final? In yesterday’s match (1st T20I vs NZ), there was a problem when they didn’t have a senior player. If They had someone senior, who could take them past the finishing line. So, Hardik Pandya and Rahul Dravid may have to consider bringing in at least one of the two (Rohit and Kohli) if the two mix. I am not,” Latif said.
The Pakistan veteran’s response came in the wake of India’s defeat against New Zealand in the first T20I on Friday. The team would like to make a comeback in the second match of the series on Sunday.
