Ponting wants Pant to be around Delhi Capitals team during IPL 2023

Rishabh Pant might be ruled out of playing in the upcoming IPL 2023, but Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting feels the team’s official captain still has a role to play. Ponting wants Pant to be around the team during the season if he has recovered enough.

Ponting said in the ICC review, ‘I want him to sit with me in the dugout every day of the week.’ “Even if he is not really physically fit to play, we would love to have him.

“She’s kind of the cultural leader around the group, being the captain, and she has that attitude and infectious smile and laugh that we all love so much about her.

“I’m sure for sure, come mid-March when we get together in Delhi and start our camps and stuff, if he’s able to be there, I want him full-time.”

Pant suffered the injury in a car accident on December 30 and is expected to be out for most of 2023. He tore three major ligaments in his knee, two of which were reconstructed on 7 January, while surgery on a third is expected in February. ,

Ponting also said that the Capitals were looking for a wicketkeeper-batsman to replace Pant, but stressed on how difficult that search could be.

Who can replace Pant?

In the auction held in December for IPL 2023, the Capitals bought five players but no wicketkeeper. The only other full-time wicketkeeping option in their side is England’s Phil Salt, who is currently donning the gloves for Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 in South Africa. Among the Indians, Sarfaraz Khan has been a part-time wicketkeeper for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament.

Ponting said, “You can’t replace those guys, it’s that simple.” “They don’t grow on trees, the players love it. We have to look – and we already are – for a replacement to come into the team.”

With the Pant-Ponting combination, the Capitals finished fifth in IPL 2022 and lost in the second qualifier in 2021. In 2020, they recorded their best performance by finishing runners-up when Shreyas Iyer was the captain. The 2023 edition is expected to begin in late March – after the inaugural edition of the Women’s IPL – and go on for the months of April and May.
