Pressure on India as New Zealand look to seal the series in Lucknow

New Zealand has finally won on this tour. After being whitewashed in the ODI series, their new caretaker captain Mitchell Santner led from the front with the ball and gave his team hope of taking the T20I series home. Things that weren’t working during the ODIs suddenly clicked: Finn Allen got them off to a brisk start and their bowlers struck with the new ball.

While Mark Chapman fell without scoring, and Glenn Phillips is yet to make a substantial knock on the tour, the visitors will back them to do well in the second T20I in Lucknow, especially now with India looking to keep the series alive There is pressure.

Things went the exact opposite way for India in the first T20 match. During ODIs, his top order was becoming a big problem for New Zealand. In Ranchi, however, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tripathi contributed only 11 runs from 17 balls as India slumped to 15 for 3 in the fourth over.

India have Prithvi Shaw in the team but before the first T20I, Hardik Pandya had said that Shubman Gill is ahead of him in the pecking order. The team management is unlikely to change its mind after just one match.

Glenn Phillips came to India after scoring an unbeaten 63 off 42 balls against Pakistan in the ODI series decider, but his scores in the three ODIs and first T20 against India have been: 11 (20), 36 (52), 5 (7) ) and 17 (22). It is not just the low score but also the strike rate. If he can find his form, it will really strengthen New Zealand’s middle order.
Rahul Tripathi made his T20I debut during the Sri Lanka series. In his second game, he scored 35 runs in only 16 balls, including five fours and two sixes. All that inside the powerplay. After the game, Pandya revealed Tripathi’s intention to include him in the squad. So a six-ball duck in Ranchi will not dent his confidence as two early jitters from his side could put the opposition on the backfoot.

With Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav bowling economically in Ranchi, while also taking three wickets between them, Yuzvendra Chahal might have to sit out again. Arshdeep Singh went for 27 runs in the last over but till then he had figures of 1/24 in three overs. So he should retain his spot, especially with India’s pace bowling department being short on experience.

India (Probable): 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Ishan Kishan (wk), 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Hardik Pandya (c), 6 Deepak Hooda, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Shivam Mavi, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Umran Malik, 11 Arshdeep Singh

New Zealand might not want to change the winning combination. That means left-arm fast bowler Ben Lister will have to wait to make his debut.

new zealand (Probable): 1 Finn Allen, 2 Devon Conway (wk), 3 Mark Chapman, 4 Glenn Phillips, 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Michael Bracewell, 7 Mitchell Santner (c), 8 Ish Sodhi, 9 Lockie Ferguson, 10 Jacob Duffy, 11 Blair Tickner

All five T20I matches hosted by the Ekana Stadium till date have been won by the team batting first. And after New Zealand successfully defended 176 in the first T20I despite the threat of dew in the second innings, both teams may elect to bat after winning the toss.
