On Tuesday afternoon, USA Cycling announced the relaunch of its athlete development pipeline. Now called the Athlete Development Pathway (ADP), the pipeline will consist of four key stages in a young athlete’s development.
According to the governing body, the Athlete Development Pathway is designed to unify four different development opportunities that will ultimately enable athletes to reach national team level.
Youth athletes at any level can enter Pathways at any point during their racing careers. Each level is designed to provide the most relevant learning and development opportunities for an athlete to take their career to the next level.
“Having run successful pilot programs like the Olympic Development Academy, we knew there was a need for race-support programs, but there also needed to be more steps along the way,” said Alec Pascalina, Director of Athlete Development Pathways.
“We have seen a great deal of success with regional camps in the past, but they were halted since the COVID pandemic. We’re excited to bring back a full schedule for road, mountain bike and cyclocross, as well as day camps and a new digital talent identification tool.
USAC’s Athlete Development Pathway consists of the following four pillars:
day camp USA Cycling will hold day camps in conjunction with popular local junior events to provide basic coaching and education for athletes and parents about development and race opportunities. Fall 2023 is coming.
talent identifier It is a power profile submission tool to help identify up-and-coming cycling talent across the country. Athletes can link their TrainingPeaks athlete account to a USAC Talent ID coach account that is discovered by USA Cycling. Coming spring 2023, available for ages 15-30.
field camp Regional camps are an important step within the development path and are accessible and attainable to all athletes. Aspiring junior cyclists can join a regional camp to improve their skills, receive the same coaching as elite athletes, and be recognized for further race opportunities with USA Cycling. Registration is now open for the mountain bike and road camps.
European Race Camp The European Race Camp will give athletes the opportunity to learn hands-on in Europe, the epicenter of cycling. Athletes will train under the guidance of top coaches and experience prestigious races and courses. Athletes will be immersed in full education sessions in strength training, skills, nutrition, strategy, sports psychology, and more. Registration is now open for the mountain bike and road camps.
