Max Riches is retiring after Cavendish deal failure
Argentine rider Max Richez is retiring after the conclusion of this weekend’s Vuelta a San Juan following a deal with Mark Cavendish to join him as leadout man.
Riches, 39, was in line to join Cavendish at Team B&B, but when the French team disbanded this fall, Riches was left without a deal. Cavendish has since joined Astana–Kazakhstan, but Riches was left with no place in the WorldTour team.
“It’s a mix of emotions. It’s my last race. As, “I was with my feet and my head ready to run into another season. There was an idea to continue with Cavendish, but the B&B situation fell through, and when he joined Astana, there was no room for me. .

Riches didn’t hold his tongue, saying he was disappointed to read in the media that Cavendish was set to join Astana.
“He couldn’t bring me with him, these things can happen, but the fact that he couldn’t call to tell me shows a lack of respect from him and his agent,” Richez said. “I found out in the media, but that’s not the problem, it’s that they didn’t tell me earlier. As a person they let me down. As a rider, nothing to say, he’s a great champion , and I only wish him the best.
Vargarda West Sweden Women’s World Tour race canceled
The Women’s WorldTour will be shortened by two days after organizers confirmed the cancellation of the Vergarde WestSweden team time trial and road race.
The pairing of the Swedish race has been a long-standing feature on the women’s cycling calendar, with the road race first held in 2006 and the team time trial introduced in 2008.
The race returns in 2022, after a two-year break enforced by the coronavirus pandemic. However, the race organizer stated that it no longer had the finances to continue the race, especially given the growing demands to hold a women’s WorldTour race.
“After a gap of two years and the loss of Hans Jonsson in 2019, we sum up a great event in 2022. Non-profit hours imposed. The economy is a big part of the decision, but there are also increasing demands on our organisation,” said race chair Helen Henriksen.
“In many ways, we have been involved in developing women’s cycling in the world. Hans has fought for better conditions for TV broadcasting and women ever since we started running the World Cup in Vergarda in 2006.
“Women’s cycling is indeed on the right track, but we see no prospect of meeting the growing demands, and running competition at the absolute highest level on a non-profit basis. The cycling festival has been a permanent event for a quarter of a century and has put Vergarda and western Sweden on the world map. We are incredibly grateful and impressed by all these efforts and forces that have worked over the years.
Doctor at the center of investigation defends Miguel Angel Lopez
Marcos Menar, the doctor at the center of the alleged doping ring, defended himself as well as Miguel Angel López.
Speaking in a Spanish court, Menar described López as a “victim of circumstances”, and said, “I would never put my hand in the fire for anyone, but I swear that López never used doping products.” not used.”
Menar admitted that he suggested that some of his athletes with whom he worked to use Actovegin, a product that is not on the WADA banned list and said that Menar did not constitute doping.
Maynar – who is part of an investigation leading up to 2022 involving six people being investigated by Spanish police – insisted he never broke any rules or regulations while working with athletes.
Johnny Hoegerland returns to pro racing
Johnny Hoogerland, the Dutch pro who retired in 2016, is back for the Sharjah Tour (UCI-2.2), January 27-31.
Hogeland, who runs a cycling hotel in Austria, said it was just a one-time opportunity, not a full-time return to the peloton.
“For now it is just one race and then I will return to Carinthia,” he told PCS.com. “It is wonderful to be part of a team trying to promote cycling in the UAE, providing a platform to young talents in the region. They are really ambitious to take up cycling here, which is great to see.
