Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) takes a morale-boosting victory in stage 4 of the Vuelta a San Juan.
The Colombian beat the likes of Peter Sagan (Total Energy) and Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) to take his first win for Movistar.
“It brings so much joy, it’s exactly what I needed,” Gaviria said. “The whole team worked for me. The climb was tough, but we knew if we did it we would have a chance to win today.”
The climb-heavy course saw many of the race’s top sprinters drop out early, opening the door for anyone with a kick to have a chance at victory.
Gaviria was also in the leader’s jersey, first and second respectively behind Sam Bennett and Fabio Jacobsen, who were left on a lumpy profile.

The win came as a relief for Gaviria, who had battled three bouts of Covid during the last two seasons. A high-profile move to Movistar on a one-year deal comes loaded with the pressure of winning.
The Vuelta a San Juan rests on Thursday, and returns on Friday with a decisive 173.7km mountaintop final from Chimbas to Alto Colorado.
GC favorites like Egan Bernal, Remco Evenpoel, Miguel Angel López and Sergio Higuita are all tied for first at 18 seconds.
