Sam Wellsford (Team DSM) galloped off Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe), Fernando Gaviria (Movistar), and Fabio Jacobsen (Soudal Quick-Step) for his biggest win on the road at the Vuelta a San Juan.
The Australian track and tarmac star timed his move on Saturday to outpace a host of bunch sprint behemoths in a rapid downhill finish and become the latest sprinter to take the honor in Argentina.
Stage 1 winner Bennett came in second, with Stage 4 winner Gaviria third.
Miguel Angel Lopez (Medellin EPM) finished in the bunch to maintain his 30-second GC lead heading into the final stage on Sunday.
Wellsford’s win on Saturday was DSM’s first win of 2023 – and only hours earlier his teammate Marius Mayrhofer had topped the podium at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
Welsford also scored DSM’s first win of 2022 at the Tour of Turkey.
“The team was amazing today and I couldn’t have done it without the guys – they looked after me all day and worked all week,” he said.
“He believed in me, he supported me and he said that today’s sprint suits me, so we got fully involved. In the finale we were super committed so I think we really deserved it!
“It was a really tough day today,” continued Wellsford. “It was pretty controlled by the sprint teams, but the run-in was really fast and I think we hit 75 kph, so it was really fast and the last five kilometers were very tough.”
The race will be decided on Sunday in a flat and fast circuit race at the San Juan Center.
